Winter in the Austrian Alps isn't just for skiers. Those who enjoy cross-country skiing, hiking, or ski touring will also find ideal conditions in the immediate vicinity of the Alpenrose. Let our list of suggestions inspire you to try something new on your next winter holiday. For leisurely days or bad weather, a day trip to nearby Altenmarkt or the state capital of Salzburg is a great option.
Altenmarkt-Zauchensee in the Salzburger Sportwelt is one of Austria’s top cross-country skiing regions. From December to April, you can enjoy 250 kilometers of snow-sure trails. Access is free, and a ski bus takes you from Zauchensee to the trail entrance in Altenmarkt. Give this gentler way of skiing a try!
47 kilometers of winter hiking trails and 42 kilometers of snowshoe tours in all difficulty levels await right on our doorstep. Along the way, cosy mountain huts invite you to indulge in regional delights. For beginners, we recommend the 2.2 km "Moon Trail" at Zauchensee as well as our weekly guided snowshoe hikes.
If you’re not a fan of descending on foot, ski touring is a great option: the effort of the climb is rewarded with a spectacular descent. In Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, you’ll find ski tours with elevation gains ranging from 430 to 1,500 meters. Popular routes include the Lackenkogel, Strimskogel, the small Pleißingkeil, and the Liebeseck.
Zauchensee offers four toboggan runs, but there’s one we especially recommend: the run from the Sonnalm, run by our family (don’t miss the excellent goat cheese!). You can reach the top on foot or by toboggan taxi, and then enjoy a thrilling ride back down into the valley. Sleds are available for rent at the hut.
If you're looking for something special, try a horseback ride through the snowy landscape or enjoy a fun afternoon with the whole family ice skating or playing Bavarian curling. Just about 10 km from Zauchensee lies the next larger town: Altenmarkt.
Here you'll find not only the well-known Amadé Thermal Spa with its pools, sauna areas, water slides, wave pool and water climbing wall, but also numerous winter events and markets – such as the Advent market, the New Year’s Eve market, and the New Year’s concert.
Just about an hour from Zauchensee lies the state capital, Salzburg. A perfect destination for culture enthusiasts, shopping lovers and city explorers alike. Be sure to visit Hohensalzburg Fortress, Mozart’s Birthplace, Mirabell Palace with its gardens, and the famous shopping street, Getreidegasse.
